Are You Incentivizing Your Staff? Here's Why You Should…and How!
By Jason Orsik

Once I’ve found productive and efficient staff, how do I keep them happy? Better yet, how can I keep them loyal to my practice? Ultimately, there are two dimensions to happy, productive and loyal staff: 1) Environment and 2) Motivation.

There are many environmental factors that contribute to the morale and productivity of your staff, and these may not coincide with what you, the owner, believe they are:

  • Interesting work
  • Appreciation of work
  • Responsibility and recognition
  • A clean work environment
  • A feeling of being in on things
  • Job security
  • And, of course, good wages

That last bullet brings us to a critical point. How can I incentivize my staff in a way that will keep them motivated, productive and loyal to my practice? The first step is to identify practice indicators. These are the different metrics of your practice such as Unit sales, Gross Revenue, Net Revenue, RFC, Referrals, Patient Satisfaction, etc. Now decide which of these indicators would be best for your practice to focus on. Are most of your new sales coming from promotions? Then choose Patient Referrals as your practice indicator and reward your staff for reaching the new goals set for the practice. Everyone can participate and everyone should have their own personal goals to contribute.

How much should I pay? First of all, remember money is not the only motivator. You can reward your staff with vacations, gift certificates, airline miles, employee of the month or quarter awards, flex time, etc. Contact your Regional Manager for examples of the many ways you can motivate and retain your staff through incentives.

Jason Orsik is a Regional Manager for the American Hearing Aid Associates.
