Writing an Ad: What should I say??
If you have
a job opening available, your first instinct is to place an advertisement.
Writing the advertisement can be a difficult task for an employer.
Knowing what to say, and how to say it can be tricky. The layout
of the ad is very important. Since the ad is going to be among
many other classifieds, it needs to stand out in order to be noticed.
There are many different ways to write an advertisement and several
places you can do place them. The following article will offer
tips on how to write an ad, and show how the wording can differ
based on the placement.
Writing
an Ad for Newspaper or Journal
Since newspapers/journals
usually charge by line or word, you may not have much space to
write the ad to be cost effective. Therefore to make the ad sound
interesting it must be clear, concise, and short. Always include
a brief job description, location of job, and contact information.
If there are extra benefits include that as well, for example:
sign on bonus, commission, etc. The following are some examples
of ads I have used for several different positions.
Receptionist:
Needed for an audiology practice in Philadelphia, PA. Individual
needed to answer phones, make appointments, greet patients, and
handle third party insurance billing. Must have good communication
skills and ability to work in fast paced environment. Experience
working in healthcare environment helpful. Please send resumes
to Jane Doe at fax (000) 000-0000.
Audiologist:
Needed for an ENT practice in Anywhere, NJ. Excellent opportunity
for an audiologist dedicated to hearing healthcare to use their
previous skills and experiences to help others. Responsibilities
include providing OAE's, ABR's ENG's, Diagnostics and Hearing
Aid Dispensing with all age groups. Must have CCC-A plus 2 years
experience. Send resumes to John Doe at fax (000) 000-0000.
Office Manager:
Needed for an audiology practice in NY, NY. Responsibilities include
supervising front office staff, ordering supplies, handing payroll,
and billing. Must have 2 + years experience in healthcare environment.
Excellent opportunity to earn competitive compensation. Send resumes
to Jane Doe at fax (000) 000-0000
If you would
like your ad to stand out more in the newspaper or journal, there
are several things you can do. You can make your ad morelengthy,
so it will be not only be bigger, but will offer more information
than some other ads. Make sure that if you do make the ad longer,
that you don't ramble. Offer information in the ad, that will
draw a candidate to keep reading and apply. Instead of saying
"salary plus benefits" you can write, "Salary 35K-$40K
plus commission. Benefits include, health insurance, retirement,
disability and CEU support." Some Journals and Newspapers
will also you allow you to bold some wording, ad a logo, and offer
some color to the ad. Adding these perks will definitely make
your ad stand out more. But, these added features can become very
expensive. So be careful on how quickly you decide to make the
ad so large. You may want to try how a smaller ad works first.
If you gain a lot of responses from the small ad, then you may
not need the added features mentioned above.
Writing
an Ad for the Internet
Most sites
whether they are fee based or are free, do not have a word limit
or charge per word. Take advantage of this feature. I have seen
many ads online, that do not are written for a paper. Therefore,
they are too brief, and do not offer much information. The internet
is a different venue than a newspaper, so it is important to see
this difference and write the ad differently. The following are
some examples of ads that have been that are very well written
Busy private
practice seeking a full time audiologist to provide a full range
of services including hearing aid fitting, diagnostics, ENG's
and ABR's. Benefits include medical and dental insurance, 401k,
2 weeks vacation and 5 sick days. Enjoy an outstanding quality
of life with spectacular scenery, good schools, low crime rate,
and cultural activities in this university town. This area is
an outdoor paradise with skiing, hiking, fishing, kayaking, etc.
just minutes from the office. If you are an audiologist looking
to earn competitive compensation and commission and work in a
exciting environment, contact us now!!!
This is very
well written because it talks not only about the job, but adds
value to working in this specific community.
XYZ practice
seeking an experienced, highly motivated individual to direct
their audiology division. The responsibilities of this position
include the supervision and management of the audiology staff,
business development, administration and management, marketing,
training, and team building. Audiologist will also be responsible
for conducting ABR's, ENG's and hearing aid fittings. Salary range
is $45K-$50 plus benefits. If you are an accomplished audiologist
looking to lead a team of dedicated audiologists, do not miss
out on this opportunity!!!
This is ad
is also very well written because it clearly explains the job
responsibilities as well and telling a little bit about the position.
Since you have unlimited space on most web postings, feel free
to include as much information as you can, while sounding interesting.
You have the benefit of using longer sentences and not short sentences
or phrases.
Conclusion
Writing an
ad is one of the most important tasks in your recruiting plan.
This is the first impression that a candidate will have about
your opening and organization. So make sure that your ad is well
thought out, clear and interesting. This will help to bring candidates
into the door!!!
